Department of Workforce Services and Wyoming Contractors Association to Honor Douglas High School Heavy Equipment Summer Project Students
CHEYENNE - The Department of Workforce Services (DWS), in conjunction with the Wyoming Contractors Association (WCA), will host a Summer Youth Project celebration Aug. 6. The celebration is set to recognize students graduating from the Summer Youth Project.
A tour of the construction project students worked on will kick off the morning at 11 a.m. behind Douglas High School (DHS) followed by lunch and Graduation Ceremonies at noon in the Douglas High School Lobby. Members of the public and media are invited to attend.
The Summer Youth Project was developed by the Wyoming Contractors Association McMurry Training Center (WCAMTC) with the Douglas High School and the DWS Douglas Workforce Center. The project provides basic life skills, work readiness skills, safety training and entry level "hands-on" heavy equipment operator skills to youth attending DHS. The project is unique in Wyoming because high school students actually trained on heavy equipment and built a road and parking area during the program.
The project services consist of career-specific skills training, safety training and support services. Participants will receive high school credit for successful completion of each program component, possibly college credit and nationally recognized certificates in the heavy equipment operator occupations from the National Center for Construction Education and Research. Successful students will have Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 hour certification, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) new employee certification, Flagger Certification and Heavy Equipment Operator Certification. Students received a training stipend based on the number of hours of participation in the class.
Joan Evans, Director of the Department of Workforce Services, is excited to recognize the success of the project and its participants. "This will be a great opportunity to not only honor the students who have worked so hard on the project this summer, but also recognize our partnership between the Douglas Workforce Center, the Wyoming Contractors Association, and the McMurry Training Center," Evans said. "It's just a great example of a successful partnership joining together to help better our Wyoming youth."
