GREEN RIVER
The City of Green River takes its name from the Green River which flows through the center of the city. The river flows through a broad steep-sided valley with prominent rock formations, know as the "Green River Formation," along either side. The wide open spaces of southwestern Wyoming are suddenly interrupted by the series of multi-colored buttes, carved over time by the Green River. The varied sizes, shapes, and shades of the eroding strata provide a majestic setting for the town. Green River, a town of approximately 14,000, is a great town for business and quality of life.
Mining, particularly of trona, is the major industry in the area. Even with the Interstate, the railroad, and other trappings of modern society, the city continues to sit at the crossroads of the west—a timeless, peaceful place. Other industries include educational, health and social services; agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting; and manufacturing.
The massive Green River flows from the mountains in the north down through the city of Green River and eventually drains into the mighty Colorado River. The Green River offers excellent fishing for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Kokanee Salmon and Catfish. The city of Green River built a White Water Park in the river through the city. The White Water Park offers u-drops for people who love rafting, kayaking and canoeing. Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, just south of Green River, is a reservoir that extends for 91 miles south into Utah. The reservoir provides varied recreational activities such as hiking, camping, powerboating, waterskiing, camping, parasailing, rafting, swimming and fishing from boats or shore. The nearby Red Desert offers opportunities for hiking, wild horse tours, wildlife viewing and more.
